Modeling Location Management in Personal Communication Services

This paper presents a framework for modeling and evaluating the performance of location management schemes for a Personal Communication Services (PCS) network. The models take into account complex human behaviors, and are based on actual measurements of these behaviors. Real measurements are a crucial factor in achieving realistic performance evaluations. We have developed a powerful and highly con gurable simulator based on the framework. Simulation results, showing the performance of an existing location management standard, IS-41, are presented in terms of database performance requirements (transactions per second) and network tra c load (messages per second).
